Getting Around Irvine

You should have received a map of the hotel from California FBLA for the conference. However, there are many things outside of the hotel, such as restaurants that you may want to know about. The following is a map of significant places outside of the hotel.

As you may notice, the restaurants outside of the hotel do require a bit of travel (there’s a nice dining complex about 1km South-East of the hotel).

The primary street you’ll be going on is Main Street (West-East), which is accessible by walking straight forwards out of the hotel along Union.

Resturaunts

West of the Hotel (Pts G and J) Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

East of the Hotel (Pts C, H and D) Burger King, Mugen Japanese Cuisine, Jamba Juice, Togos

Inside the Hotel: Jamboree Café (Serves Starbucks coffee and deli items), The Café (Sells breakfast and lunch items, sodas, chips, etc.). Note that the Jamboree closes at 3PM and the Café closes at 4PM.

Conference Rules

Most of these rules are self-explanatory, but we will outline them to remind you of them. Failure to follow these rules could result in a wide array of consequences, with a permanent ban from all future MVFBLA conferences for breaking the most serious rules.

  • Do not go into opposite gender rooms. We understand that you may have opposite gender friends (unless you’re an antisocial nerd like me…), so if you want to hang out with them, you may do so in the hallways or any of the other wonderful places in the hotel.
  • Be in your room before curfew. While the “official” rules state that you must be in your room by curfew, the officers will conduct room checks a few minutes before curfew. If you aren’t in your room during the room checks it slows the process down. If you aren’t in your room by curfew, you are actually breaking a rule.
  • Do not damage hotel property. This should be obvious. If you break something or damage something, you will have to pay for it.
  • Do not incur charges during your stay. You will ultimately be responsible for any charges you incur. Should you need to do anything that will incur a charge to the hotel room (such as buying internet), make sure you run it by an officer first before doing so. You will have to pay for any charges you incur during the conference.
  • Take off your nametag before going outside. You don’t want random creepers on the street to see your name and school.
  • Before going outside the hotel, contact an officer. Let us know where you are before you leave the hotel. This includes meals. If you get kidnapped by Pedobear and we don't know...well, we'll see you on /b/ later.
  • You are not permitted to leave the conference. This is California FBLA policy. If there are special circumstances please speak to a competitions officer beforehand.
  • Remember that you represent MVFBLA! Don’t do anything that would damage our professional image as a chapter.

Remember also that business attire is to be worn during all workshops and conference activities. You can wear whatever you want to aside from the official conference activities, however.

Competition Tips

Besides the basic rules related to your competition, there’s some basic, general pointers to help you succeed.

  • Make sure your dress shirt and tie are pressed. There’s an ironing board in your room and an iron – don’t wear wrinkly clothes to your competition.
  • Show up 15 minutes early. You don’t want to run the risk of running late for your competition and risk a DQ. In addition if you show up and forgot to bring something (like your Student ID), you’ll have time to go back to your room and get it.
  • Turn off your cell phone. Many of us may disregard “off and away” at school, but during your competition is not the time to do this. Make sure your cell phone is completely turned off while you compete.
  • Don’t put up all the ribbons. We give you a bunch of ribbons to put on your name tag, but only put 1-2 on at most – lots of ribbons will attract the judge’s attention away from you.
  • Do a tech-check before you go in. Turn on your computer and connect all the cables beforehand to avoid set-up difficulties – other officers can help you beforehand, but they can’t do that once you’re in the competition room.

Conference Tricks

Items of interest your hotel room is supplied with include two beds (for sleeping or studying meiosis on), a desk and a coffee maker.

The Coffee Maker
Why did I mention coffee maker just now? Because it makes a great improvised water boiler. Simply use tap water and collect the boiled water in the coffee cup. You can use the boiled water to make tea if you brought tea with you.

The Desk
The desk can be a great place to plug in your electronics – there’s a power outlet pretty close to it. However, note that there are four people in the room, and it’ll get crowded pretty soon. I’d recommend bringing your own surge protectors so that you can plug in a few more electronic devices seeing as we can’t live without them.

Beds

If any of you are in Calculus BC, you should be able to figure out that 2 beds with 4 people results in ½ bed per person. It may be preferable to call the front desk and ask for a rollaway bed, and alternate between the four of you to decide who has to double-up on beds each night.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags can I bring?
There is no official restriction as we are not flying down, however please try to restrict yourself to 1 suitcase and 1-2 personal bags (purse/computer case). There is not a lot of space on the bus for you to haul your whole house with you (unless you live in a cardboard box).

Is there free Internet?
Unfortunately, the Internet at the hotel costs money. However you can arrange to split the cost between members of your rooming group and share the Internet using a wireless router. Instructions on how to set this up are available in the Downloads section of this page.

How many dances are there?
Let n represent the number of dances. n = [d/dx ln(x)]*3x

Can I stay up as late as I want?
Yes, as long as you are inside your room by curfew. We will be conducting room checks every night starting 10 minutes before curfew. Do not go out after curfew or you risk being caught by any one of the CAFBLA authorities patrolling the halls.
